Forest Name:	Nez Perce National Forest
Location:	Salmon River Canyon, near Lucile.

Description:	This cactus is common in much of the more arid west, but on the Nez Perce National Forest, it is limited to hot and dry, low elevation grasslands and shrublands of the large river canyons.

Description:	This is one of the earliest and most common spring wildflowers often blooming near snow banks as they melt. It can be found in almost all habitats ranging from grasslands to assorted forest types and into the subalpine throughout much of the west.

Description:	This common penstemon species often forms spectacular early to mid-summer blooms in the warm canyon grasslands and rocky forest openings throughout its limited range of north central Idaho and adjacent states.

Description:	This interesting species is often a member of very lush plant communities and an indicator warm and moist forest types in north and north central Idaho. When crumpled, the leaves have a strong ginger odor.

Description:	This diminutive annual member of the figwort family is widespread at hot and very dry habitats in much of the western United States. On the Nez Perce National Forest it is limited to the large canyons of the western portion of the forest. Blooms can be spectacular or absent depending on the amount of spring rain.

Description:	Also known as Cassiope, this heather is more common in the high, moister mountains of the northern Rockies and Cascades. But it can be found on a few of the higher summits of the Nez Perce National Forest in central Idaho.

Description:	One of many species of buckwheat on the Nez Perce National Forest, strict buckwheat is common on the warmer, low elevation canyons where it has a strong affinity for basalt rock outcrops.

Description:	Not really a grass, this lily is one of the more abundant plants of mid to high elevations in the mountains. It also is found in low bottoms where cold air collects. It blooms in mid-summer.

Description:	This member of the lily family is one of several wild onions that are found on the Nez Perce National Forest. Most grow in seasonally moist/dry grasslands or open forests. The bloom period is spring into early summer.

Description:	This is the most common of four species of heather that grows on the Nez Perce National Forest. All grow in moist subalpine habitats, often at or near the tree line.

Description:	There are several species of rockcress (Arabis sp.)and pussy-toes (Antennaria microphylla)on the Nez Perce National Forest. They extend from lush, low forests to grasslands to the highest subalpine peaks.

Description:	This subalpine penstemon is endemic to the Selway Bitterroot Mountains of north central Idaho and adjacent Montana. Almost all of its range is on the Nez Perce National Forest.

Description:	This rare lily is endemic to the canyons and prairies of west-central Idaho. Populations on the western portion of the Nez Perce National Forest contain the large majority of these plants. It blooms in mid-summer in quality remnant grasslands.

Description:	This small, but spectacular annual flower grows on open soils in grasslands and shrublands that are typically saturated in the spring, but very dry most of the summer. Look for it on south facing, open habitats above the main streams and rivers in the Clearwater and Salmon basins. Although this photo was taken on a neighboring forest, this plant is as common on the Nez Perce NF.
