Release Date: May 7th, 2025

National Forests and Grasslands throughout the Intermountain Region, including the Salmon-Challis National Forest, offer various firewood, pole, and special forest product permits for personal and/or commercial use.  Special forest products are non-wood goods that can be found in the forest such as mushrooms, Christmas trees, foliage, and seedlings.  Listed below are the limits, fees, and permit requirements for most products available.  Please adhere to all regulations and best practices while gathering Forest products.

Four types of wood permits are available for purchase:

  • Personal-use Firewood costs $5.00 per cord with a maximum of 12 cords per household per year.
  • Energy Assistance Charge Firewood in Lemhi and Custer Counties (firewood is for donation only) costs $5.00 per cord with a maximum of 60 cords per person per year.
  • Commercial-use Charge Firewood costs $5.00 per cord with a maximum of 60 cords per person per year.
  • Commercial use-dead poles <5” DBH costs $0.25 per pole with a maximum of 1,200 poles per person per year.

Special forest products available include:

  • Personal-use transplants cost $5.00 per tree with a maximum of 12 trees per person per year.
  • Christmas trees are free with a maximum of two (2) free trees per household per year.

For visitors planning to collect mushrooms in 2025, there are three things you need to know before you go!  If an individual plans to collect no more than five (5) gallons total during the 2025 season, no permit is needed.  A total of one (1) gallon per day can be collected and in a person’s possession. For visitors planning to collect more than five gallons in 2025, two permits are available:

  • Personal-use free mushroom is a free permit which allows possession of five gallons per day with a maximum of 20 gallons per person per season.
  • Personal-use charge mushrooms cost $1.00 per gallon which allows possession of five gallons per day with a maximum of 300 gallons per person per year.
