Abstract:
- This data publication contains data collected in the Partial Cutting Study (PCS) at Dukes Experimental Forest (DEF) in Michigan, which was previously known as the Upper Peninsula Experimental Forest. The PCS, originally opened in 1926 and closed in 1966, used variations of selection system (uneven-aged silviculture) and diameter-limit cutting methods. The PCS was reopened in 2007 and the location of 15 permanent sample plots (PSPs), representing nine different cutting methods, were relocated. This publication contains seedling presence data by species, regeneration tallies by species, and diameter class and species data for sapling-sized trees located on plots nested within all 15 PSPs. Data were collected in 2007, 2009, and 2019.

Purpose:
- The PCS was developed at DEF in 1926 to investigate selection and other cutting methods for their potential to create continuous timber supplies due to concerns at the time over loss of timber reserves due to widespread high-grading.

- Comprehensive information on the study’s history, silvicultural treatments, and data collected between 1927 and 1966, can be found in Kern et al. (2021). - Data collected between 2007 and 2019 were reviewed for quality assurance. All data were checked for both completeness and logical consistency prior to publication.
The Dukes Experimental Forest (DEF) study was conceived in 1926 and officially closed in 1966. There was no active management at DEF after the closure of the study until harvesting resumed in 1986. Data collection resumed in 2007. Due to differences in sampling protocols when the study was reopened in 2007, the Partial Cutting Study (PCS) data collected in the 2000s was published separately from the data collected prior to the study’s closure in 1966. For more information on the study’s data, methods, and harvests prior to 1986, refer to Kern et al. (2021).
During the study’s re-establishment in 2007, the original Permanent Sample Plots (PSP) infrastructure in all nine of the cutting units (CUs), consisting of wooden stakes marking the corner of each PSP, were found with the exception of corner stakes for CU 1 (PSP 2 and PSP 3). See the Methodology section for more details on the PCS reestablishment.
The 2019 location map (\Supplements\DEF_PCS_SiteMap_2019.pdf) and accompanying plot locations (\Supplements\DEF_PCS_PlotLocations_2019.pdf) were based on GPS data collected in 2007. GPS coordinates were recorded at PSP corners which were marked by wooden stakes. In cases where a corner stake wasn’t found, an approximate corner location of the PSP was recorded based on ground conditions. As noted above, none of the corner stakes for PSP 2 and PSP 3 were located and as a result the shape of PSP 2 and PSP 3 are not right angles, but since GPS data reflected ground conditions it wasn’t further edited. For information regarding how PSP plot corners locations were re-established (using ArcGIS 10.5.1) see the Process Steps section.

- This section contains issues or abnormalities in the data collected.
Only live trees of commercial species (i.e., tree species suitable for industrial wood products) were included in sapling, seedling, and regeneration datasets.
In 2009, saplings, regeneration, and seedlings weren’t measured at the following CUs and PSPs because they weren’t treated winter 2007/2008: CU 5 (PSP 16), CU 6 (PSP 17), CU 7 (PSP 23 and 24), and CU 9 (PSP 41). Specifically, PSPs 16, 17, and 41 were last harvested prior to 1962, PSP 24 is in a lowland reserve area and was not cut, and PSP 23 was in the matrix between gaps where no harvesting occurred.
In 2019, both regeneration and seedling data were collected at East and West subplots within sapling plots at PSP 9. Prior to 2019, these data were collected at North and South subplots within the 4 sapling plots at PSP 9.

1. \Data\DEF_PCS_Regen_2007to2019.csv:
From 2007 to 2019, a total of 68 subplots did not have any regeneration, so subplots were recorded as “null” records, where species is NA and count is 0 and a “NO REGEN” comment was included under the Notes field.
2. \Data\DEF_PCS_Saplings_2007to2019.csv:
In 2007 and 2009, multiple plots in the clearcut (CC) treatment (PSP 12 and 13) did not have any saplings, so the plots were recorded as “null” records, where diameter class and species are NA and a “NO SAPLINGS” comment was included under the Notes field. One record from PSP 33 in 2007 had a species recorded (sugar maple), but diameter class was missing (NA). Additionally, one record from PSP 33 in 2019 has a diameter class of “1” and species listed as unknown (UNK); however, field notes indicate it was possibly a balsam poplar. Comments were included under the Notes field that reflects the missing and incomplete data.
3. \Data\DEF_PCS_Seedlings_2007to2019.csv:
From 2007 to 2019, a total of 15 subplots did not have any seedlings, so subplots were recorded as “null” records, where species is NA and Presence/Absence (P/A) is 0 and a “NO SEEDLINGS” comment was included under the Notes field.
The control unit (PSP 1) was salvage logged in the early 1960s after a storm event and, therefore, no longer served as a control unit after that time. It was not resurveyed with this methodology.

A) PSP RE-ESTABLISHMENT
In 1926, the Partial Cutting Study (PCS) was initiated at the Dukes Experimental Forest (DEF). The study was officially closed in 1966 but re-established in 2007 using historical maps (\Supplements\DEF_PCS_OverviewMap_1934.pdf) and archived communications. All PSPs were located using one or more existing wooden corner stakes and/or wooden stakes at one-chain intervals along the plot boundaries, apart from PSPs 2 and 3, for which wooden stakes could not be found. In that unit, the sample plot was established by starting the NW corner approximately two chains west of the road intersection (Lawson Road and Forest Road 2905). Existing maps of CUs with plot locations (circa 1930s and 1940s) were used to determine bearing and length of PSP boundaries.
During plot re-establishment, existing wooden corner or plot boundary stakes were flagged with two yellow or orange ribbons. Corners were then flagged in pink and labeled with both the direction of the corner (e.g., SW) and plot number. The base was marked with an orange stake-chaser on a wire pigtail stake. Each chain along the boundary was then marked by a blue stake-chaser on a wire pigtail stake and flagged in pink. The coordinates of the flags were labeled alphanumerically on PSP boundaries with the number of chains from the PSP corner as well as the cardinal direction of the boundary line. For example, the flag located 2 chains west from the southeast corner was labelled “S-2”.
Nested within PSPs are 1.0-chain by 0.5-chain plots used to tally saplings. The number of plots varies by PSP acreage. Sapling plot corners were marked with a white PVC flag and tied with orange flagging. Seedling and regeneration field data were collected on two square milacre plots (6.6 feet on each side) located on the two corners of each sapling plot (inside [interior of PSP] corner) and 0.5-chains from the PSP wooden corner post. For example, at CU 9 (PSP 41) the two sapling plots are in the northeast and northwest corners of the PSP and the east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration subplots are nested in the southeast and southwest (interior) corners of the sapling plot.
All CUs and PSPs in the PCS are rectangular or square in shape but vary in area. PSP area and dimensions as well as sapling plot locations are listed below by CU, corresponding treatment, and PSP number(s):
CU 1 – Diameter Limit, 22-inch (DL22) – PSPs 2 and 3:
This CU contains two rectangular 2-acre PSPs that were 10-chains (north-south) by 2-chains (east-west) and were laid out to the north (PSP 2) and south (PSP 3) of each other sharing one boundary (PSP 2 south boundary line is also the PSP 3 north boundary line). Each PSP has four sapling plots, located in the northeast corner of PSPs as well as W-3, E-5, and W-8. Nested within the four sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 2 – Over-Mature and Defective 1, Single-tree Selection 1 (OMD1) – PSP 9:
This CU contains one 2-acre rectangular PSP, 5-chains (north-south) by 4-chains (east-west). There are four sapling plots, located in the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest corners. Nested within the four sapling plots are north and south subplots for seedling and regeneration used in 2007 and 2009. In 2019, data were taken at east and west subplots.
CU 3 – Diameter Limit, 12-inch (DL12) – PSPs 10 and 11:
This CU contains two adjacent 1-acre PSPs. Each PSP was 3.3-chains (east-west) by 3-chains (north-south). PSP 10 is east of PSP 11 and share a boundary line (PSP 10 west boundary line is also the PSP 11 east boundary line). Each PSP has two sapling plots, located in the northeast and southeast corners. Nested within the 2 sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 4 – Clearcut (CC) – PSPs 12 and 13:
This CU contains two adjacent 1-acre PSPs. Each PSP was 3.3-chains (east-west) by 3-chains (north-south). PSP 12 is east of PSP 13 and share a boundary line (PSP 12 west boundary line is also the PSP 13 east boundary line). Each PSP has two sapling plots, located in the northeast and southeast corners. Nested within the two sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 5 – Improvement Heavy (ImpHvy) – PSP 16:
This CU contains one 2-acre PSP, 4-chains (north-south) by 5-chains (east-west). There are four sapling plots, located in the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest corners. Nested within the four sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 6 – Improvement Light (ImpLite) – PSP 17:
This CU contains one 1-acre PSP, 3.3-chains (east-west) by 3-chains (north-south). There are two sapling plots, located in the northeast and southeast corners. Nested within the two sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 7 – Group Selection (GrpSel) – PSPs 22-25:
This CU contains three 1-acre PSPs (22–24), 3.3-chains (east-west) by 3-chains (north-south), as well as one 2-acre PSP (25), 4-chains (north-south) by 5-chains (east-west).
PSPs 22, 23, and 24 each have two sapling plots, located in the northeast and southeast corners. Nested within the two sapling plots at PSPs 22, 23, and 24 are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration. PSP 25 has four sapling plots, located in the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest corners. Nested within the four sapling plots at PSP 25 are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 8 – 70-Percent Selection (Sel70Pct) – PSP 33:
This CU contains one 4-acre PSP, 10-chains (east-west) by 4-chains (north-south). There are eight sapling plots, located in the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest corners of the PSP in addition to N-3, N-6, S-3, and S-6. Nested within the eight sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
CU 9 – Over-Mature and Defective 2, Single-tree Selection 2 (OMD2) – PSP 41:
This CU contains one 1-acre PSP, 2-chains (north-south) by 5-chains (east-west). There are two sapling plots, located in the northeast and northwest corners. Nested within the two sapling plots are east and west subplots for seedling and regeneration.
B) INVENTORY AND HARVEST SCHEDULES
A table of tree regeneration and harvest by year of activity can be found in \Supplements\DEF_PCS_RegenHarvActivity_1986to2019.pdf.
After the original PCS was officially closed in 1966, no activity took place in the PCS until 1986 when some of the treatments (DL22, DL12, OMD1, and Sel70Pct) were harvested.
When the PCS was the reopened in 2007, PSPs were inventoried as described in Section D below and harvested the following winter (2007/2008). In 2009, a post-harvest inventory occurred. In 2019, a 10-year post-harvest inventory occurred at the PSPs harvested in winter 2007/2008. ImpHvy (PSP 16), ImpLite (PSP 17), GrpSel (only PSP 23 and 24), and OMD2 (PSP 41) were only measured in 2007 and not again in 2009 because at these locations, the last harvests occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. The next inventory is scheduled for 2023, 15 years post-harvest, and the new schedule is being integrated into the Hiawatha National Forest’s planning process to maintain experimental forest objectives, including the maintenance of long-term studies.
C) TREATMENT DESCRIPTIONS
Most of the harvest activity at the PCS occurred prior to 1966. Those data are summarized in Kern et al. (2021) which also includes comprehensive information on treatment descriptions and harvest years by corresponding treatment. Harvest activity for years 1986-2019 has been summarized in \Supplements\DEF_PCS_RegenHarvActivity_1986to2019.pdf. Treatment descriptions are listed below.
DL22 (Diameter Limit, 22-inch)- Harvests follow the >21.5-inch diameter limit. Harvests occurred in 1986 and 2008. The 2008 harvest was modeled on the 1986 harvest.
OMD1 (Over-Mature and Defective 1, Single-tree Selection 1)- Harvest of over-mature and defective trees. The 2008 harvest was modeled on the 1986 harvest. Both harvests followed the Arbogast Marking Guide (see Methodology Citations for full reference).
DL12 (Diameter Limit, 12-inch)- Harvests in 1986 and 2008 resulted in the logging of most trees >11.5 inches DBH. The 2008 harvest was modeled on the 1986 harvest.
CC (Clearcut)- In 1927, everything merchantable was cut, including chemical wood down to 4 inches DBH. These PSPs were thinned for the first time in 2009.
ImpHvy (Improvement Heavy)- All overmature and defective trees harvested, regardless of size. No harvest activity has occurred since the 1950s.
ImpLite (Improvement Light)- Only the most decadent trees removed, regardless of size. No harvest activity has occurred since the 1950s.
GrpSel (Group Selection)- Removal of all merchantable trees in small groups up to one-third acre. This treatment was not cut in 1986. In 2009, small groups up to one-tenth acre were cut on ten percent of the cutting unit.
Sel70Pct (70-Percent Selection)- Most overmature and defective trees of any size class and trees >16.6 inches DBH were harvested in 1986 and 2009. The 2009 harvest was modeled on the 1986 harvest.
OMD2 (Over-Mature and Defective 2, Single-tree Selection 2)- In 1962 all overmature and defective trees harvested and followed single-tree selection (Arbogast 1957). No harvest activity has occurred since 1962.
D) MEASUREMENT PROTOCOLS
The measurement protocols observed in the PCS are detailed below:

Regeneration (trees 1.0 feet tall to <0.5 inches DBH) were measured on two square milacre plots (6.6 feet on each side) located on the two corners of each sapling plot (inside [interior of PSP] corner) and 0.5-chain from the PSP wooden corner post. Regeneration was recorded as number of stems by commercial tree species.
2. \Data\DEF_PCS_Saplings_2007to2019.csv
Saplings (trees 0.5 inches DBH to <4.5 inches DBH) were tallied in plots by species. Sapling plot corners were marked with a white PVC flag and tied with orange flagging. Diameter class (1-4) and species (of commercial trees only) were recorded, and DBH was marked with a red or orange paint stick. Sapling tallies occurred in 1.0-chain by 0.5-chain plots, the number of which varied by acreage of the PSP.
3. \Data\DEF_PCS_Seedlings_2007to2019.csv
Seedlings (tree regeneration smaller than 1.0 feet tall) were recorded only as present by species on the same two square milacre plots as regeneration. Seedlings only included commercial tree species.

- PLOT LOCATIONS
Permanent Sample Plots (PSP) plot corner coordinates were collected in August 2007 under leaf-on conditions using a recreational-grade GPS receiver. GPS points were taken at wooden posts that mark each corner of the PSPs. Depending on PSP, zero to four corner posts were located and GPS coordinates were written in a notebook. Coordinate accuracy was recorded to range from 15 to 31 feet. Coordinate values were entered into a comma-separated values file (\Supplements\DEF_PCS_PlotLocations_2019.csv). After importing PSP plot corner coordinates into ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1, GPS field-collected data did not represent PSP shapes accurately and a combination of historical establishment reports and a 1934 paper map (\Supplements\DEF_PCS_OverviewMap_1934.pdf) were used to revise corner coordinates to create both a map of the Partial Cutting Study (PCS) cutting units (CUs) and PSPs and latitudes and longitudes of PSP corners. The ArcMap editing tools employed to make the map were Direction-Distance, Snapping, and Measure. Where possible, a point was set based on the location described in establishment reports. From that point, the editing tools were used to set three more corner points to recreate the plot dimensions as described. Because records were missing for the control (PSP 1), this was recreated using both the 1934 site map and an ESRI Online Basemap layer showing early fall vegetation that clearly displayed the boundaries of the stand. From the recreated plot corners, polygons representing PSP area were created using the Draw tool, and plot locations (latitudes and longitudes) were estimated using the Calculate Geometry tool. Note that these plot corner locations are estimates and may vary from the plot corners that were re-established at the field site. The geographic coordinate system used was GCS North American 1983.
