The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the USDA Forest Service provides the information needed to assess America's forests.

The long history of scientifically credible FIA data provides critical status and trend information to resource managers, policy makers, investors, and the public through a system of annual resource inventory that covers both public and private forest lands across the United States.

FIA reports on status and trends in forest area and location; on the species, size, and health of trees; on total tree growth, mortality, and removals by harvest; on wood production and utilization rates by various products; and on forest land ownership.

SRS FIA implements the FIA program throughout the southern U.S.

SRS FIA collects, analyzes, and reports on data pertaining to forest land and woodlands across the South. This region includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, the US Virgin Islands, and Virginia.

Our success is a direct result of our partners and specialists who work together to collect, manage, and analyze all components of the FIA program, both nationally and regionally. Teams fulfilling this mission in SRS include:

  • Data Acquisition Team: Focuses on standardization of FIA’s core field data collection across the southern region. This includes collecting data, testing new protocols, developing documentation and training programs, and conducting quality assurance. For more information, contact the Data Acquisition Team Lead, Angie Rowe
  • Information Management Team: Focuses on data management systems for FIA data, including systems for data collection, data editing and validation, internal and public databases, and web applications that allow all users to access and analyze southern FIA data. For more information, contact the Information Management Team Lead, Chad Keyser
  • Analysis Team: Focuses on reporting and providing statistically defensible methods for summarizing FIA data in the South, including identification of new variables (either field measured or computed) needed by FIA customers. For more information, contact the Analysis Team Lead, Kerry Dooley
  • Techniques Research Team: Focuses on improving the efficiency, timeliness, and quality of the FIA program in the South through research that assesses and integrates new technologies and methodologies into current FIA workflows. For more information, contact the Techniques Research Team Lead, Todd Schroeder.
  • Resource Use Team: Focuses on implementing the National Resource Use Monitoring (NRUM) program through Timber Products Output (TPO) mill surveys and Harvest Utilization (HU) data collection efforts. For more information, contact the Resource Use Lead, James Bentley
