Intro for Physical Security Web Site

Awareness of security at Federal buildings and offices has been increased due to recent events like the Oklahoma City bombing and terrorist attacks. Forest Service facilities should be no exception. The security needs of all Forest Service facilities should be considered carefully. The appropriate level of security will vary from facility to facility.

This Web site is separated into the following sections:

  • Physical Security Basics—provides fundamental information on facility physical security including objectives, concerns at Forest Service Facilities, and expectations of physical security needs.

  • Threat & Vulnerability Assessment—describes the fundamentals of assessing threats and facility vulnerabilities.

  • Facility Planning—describes measures facility planners should consider when constructing or remodeling structures.

  • Deterrents—gives in-depth information on such items as barriers, fences and gates, doors, locks, glazing, walls and ceilings, and lighting that can be used as deterrents.

  • Alarm Systems and Sensors—describes alarm systems and sensors used in and around facilities.

  • Video & Access Control Systems—describes the basics of video surveillance like closed-circuit television and electronic/mechanical access control systems.

A security profession helped prepare the information in this Web site. This person knows in detail the steps that must be taken for facilities to be as secure as possible. Some recommendations that might be appropriate for a facility that needs to maintain high security would not be appropriate in other facilities. Keep the security level that is appropriate for your facility in mind when considering each recommendation.
