Beefy Backpack Tree Marking Paint System
Components
The backpack is a modified fire field pack. The backpack carries the tank, gas cylinder, and some personal items. The main compartment of the backpack is deeper to fit the steel tank. The tree marker can attach canteen cases or pouches to the backpack harness. Other backpacks and harnesses may also be used.
Metal beverage tank – An "Off-the-shelf" metal beverage tank was selected as the pressure vessel to reduce the time and expense for design and certification of the tank. Pressure vessels with an operating pressure greater than 15 psig need to be designed and certified to the Section VIII of American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The beverage tank is rated and certified for a working pressure of 130 psi. The tank has the necessary fittings built-in the tank. The fittings are "quick disconnect" fittings, which allow the user to disconnect the tank from the nurse bottle or the wand from the tank. No major modifications are needed. This metal tank is also equipped with a pressure relief valve on the tank cover.

Empty weight: 18 lbs (11.4 liters), 8 lbs (3.8 liter)
Backpack – An "off-the shelf" tank backpack will be used to reduce the time and expense of designing and building a backpack that would fit the tank. The backpack, made by Rocket Man Inc., is designed for both size tanks. The backpack, tanks, and accessories can be purchased from Rocket Man Inc. as a system. The backpack is insulated which will help when working in sub freezing temperatures.
Large Backpack
Dimensions: 22 inches (H) x 12 Inches (diameter)
Small Backpack
Dimensions: 15 inches (H) x 12 Inches (diameter)
The backpacks are cylindrical and are insulated. Two internal compartments will be used to secure the CO2 bottle and the paint gun hose. The Paint gun hose is also insulated and passes through the bottom of the bag.
The third backpack option is using the firefighter backpack and web gear available through GSA. Minor modifications to the backpack are recommended to make the 1 gallon tank fit better and be more comfortable to wear.
Pressure Regulators – There are three types of regulators being investigated. The regulator, which comes with the Rocketman, is factory set and has a male thread which screws into the nurse bottle. This regulator will take the pressure down to 20 psi. The two other regulators are adapted from the paintball gun industry. CO2 Nurse Bottle – Three types of bottles will be used: two 20 oz and one 12 oz. One of the 20 oz bottles comes with the Rocketman system and has a built in regulator. The second and third bottles are a 12 oz bottle and a 20 oz bottle used for paintball gun systems. These systems use CO2. CO2 provides a more consistent pressure. CO2 in the nurse bottle is a liquid phase therefore one can store more CO2 per volume. The options for bottles are not limited to the three mentioned here. The paintball industry has several sizes and types. The two regulators used in this project will adapt to the bottles.
Service Pressure: 1800 PSI / 124 BAR
Test Pressure: 3000 PSI / 207 BAR
Material: Every cylinder is produced from high strength aluminum alloy 6061-T6.
Markings: Cylinders are stamped with required U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada (TC) Markings.
