The above drawing illustrates how live stakes are used. The drawing shows three "dead stout stakes" drove into the streambed near the bank of the stream. There are "coconut rolls" between each dead stout stake. Upshore from the dead stout stakes are the live stakes. The drawing explains the live stakes roots should extend to dry season water level. The live stakes should have triangular spacing 2 to 3 feet apart. The drawing also shows that "existing vegetation, plantings, or soil bioengineering techniques" can be used in addition. The drawing notes: "Rooted, leafed condition of plant material is not representative of the time of installation.
