Mark R. Weinhold—Technology Applications Person of the Year
Mark Weinhold is the forest hydrologist and manages the watershed/fisheries program at the White River National Forest in western Colorado. His current duties include determining the hydrologic effects of ski area expansions, oil and gas development, grazing, timber sales, and road construction; hydraulic design for bridges and major culverts; and managing the watershed restoration program. He is a member of the national teaching cadre for the Forest Service's aquatic organism passage (AOP) program. He developed a computer-based e-learning tool for road-stream crossing design as well as implementation and effectiveness monitoring protocols for AOP projects. Mark assisted the Forest Service International Programs with a climate change needs assessment in Vietnam and spatial planning training in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Mark is a licensed professional civil engineer registered in the State of Oregon and is a registered professional hydrologist through the American Institute of Hydrology. His bachelor's degree from Oregon State University is in civil engineering. His master's degree from Colorado State University is in hydrology and hydraulic engineering. Mark currently is working toward his doctorate in hydraulic engineering at Colorado State University. His past and current graduate work has largely focused on open-channel hydraulics and modeling sediment transport in gravel-bed rivers.
Mark has been married for 25 years. The younger of his two children starts college this fall. His favorite movie is "Princess Bride." His first car was a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle.
