Field StorageStoring Unused SeedlingsAvoid having leftover seedlings by limiting the number of seedlings delivered each day. However, when seedlings are left over at the end of the planting day, examine their physiological condition. If they are still dormant and tree box temperatures are low, these seedlings may be returned to the tree cooler or appropriate storage area. Discard seedlings if they have warmed or are becoming physiologically active. Do not return any seedlings that have been in planting bags. Also consider the availability of seedlings and how long it will be before seedlings will be needed. If there is a shortage of seedlings, you may need to take more risks by holding over trees than if there are plenty of seedlings. Plant seedlings that have been returned to storage on the next working day. If the seedlings are wrapped, bundles must be stored with the tops upright in open boxes, unless below-freezing temperatures are expected in exposed shelters. |
