Forest Health Protection: Training Opportunities

Hazard Tree Management Training

The course focuses on how to identify and manage hazard trees in recreation areas and administrative sites. Topics include: concepts and components of hazard; an overview of defects and diseases that increase the likelihood of tree failure; the biology of trees, defects, and diseases; policy decisions regarding hazard tree inspections and mitigation; procedures for hazard tree inspections+; and options for vegetation management and hazard tree mitigation. The first day is indoors with lectures, discussions, and demonstrations (or recently virtual lectures). The second day is in the field*, with hands-on experience regarding hazard tree identification. This training is for anyone who works with hazard trees. Tuition is free. Participants are responsible for their own travel, lodging, and food.

Forest Insect and Disease Identification Training

This course focuses on identification, biology, and impacts of the major forest insect pests and diseases in the Rocky Mountain Region+. We will look at insects and diseases by host and forest type with an emphasis on bark beetles, defoliators, root diseases, stem decays, and stem rusts. This course includes lectures, discussions, and demonstrations (or recently virtual lectures) and an in-field component* to facilitate hands-on learning. This training is for anyone who manages forested lands. Tuition is free. Participants are responsible for their own travel, lodging, and food.
