Pend Oreille Lake Region
The area provides world-class recreation opportunities year-round, centered around the state's largest lake with a surface area of 148 square miles.
The lake is fed by the Clark Fork River and the Pack River and drains into the Pend Oreille River. It provides outstanding fishing opportunities.
Kalispel, Kutenai and other native peoples were the first inhabitants of this area. They lived along the waterways and utilized the area's abundant natural resources for survival.
The lake and surrounding mountains now provide numerous hiking, camping, and sightseeing adventures.
Sam Owen Campground, the Idaho Panhandle National Forests' largest campground, sits on the lake shore near Hope. Nearby is Lightning Creek, a seasonal whitewater destination, and Scotchman Peak, a renowned hiking trail that offers sweeping vistas of the area.
