Columbine Campground
Set along the Red River in a steep canyon, this site is at the base of the Columbine Canyon Trail with access into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness.

Recreation Opportunities
Fishing - River/Stream Info
Access two streams for fishing:
- Red River
- Columbine Creek
- Special Trout Waters: A Red Chile Water designation is in place for Columbine Creek, from its confluence with Red River upstream to its headwaters. Check with the New Mexico Department of Wildlife for restrictions.
Hunting Info
Located within Game Management Unit 53, the campground is a great homebase for your hunting trip.
Please remember that discharing a firearm is prohibited:
- In or within 150 yards of a building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area and
- Across or on a National Forest System road or a body of water adjacent thereto, or in any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result in such discharge.
Hiking Info
The Columbine Canyon Trail into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness begins at the back end of the campground.
Biking - Road Cycling Info
Ride Highway 38, one part of the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway.
- Note: Bicycles are not allowed on the Columbine Canyon Trail once in the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness.
Horseback Riding Info
The Columbine Canyon Trail (#71) into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness is located at the back of the campground. There is no room for horse trailers in the day use parking lot. Park along Highway 38 outside the campground.
Camping: There are no campsites that allow horses or horse facilities within the campground.
