Elkhorn Trailhead

Overview

The Elkhorn Trailhead is located on Thousand Lakes Mountain northeast of Loa, Utah along Forest Road 206 at an elevation of 9,843 feet.

Facilities

Facilities include vault restroom, an information kiosk and natural surface dirt parking.

Natural Features

The trailhead is situated in a small meadow surrounded by aspen, spruce and fir trees.

Recreation

Popular activities in the area include ATV/UTV riding on designated routes, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, camping and wildlife watching. The trailhead provides access to the Great Western Trail and several other motorized trails.  Most of these trails are open to vehicles 50 inches or less in width.  The Great Western Trail offers spectacular views of Capitol Reef National Park. Ride only on routes designated on the Forest Service Travel Map.  Pack out what you bring in. 

General Information

June-October

-Overnight camping is prohibited at the trailhead. Camping is available adjacent to the trailhead in Elkhorn Campground.

-Pack out all trash and follow leave no trace principles.

-Use designated vault toilet to protect natural environment and wildlife.

-Use existing sites and park only on durable surfaces (not vegetation).

-Avoid creating new trails.

-All motorized travel is restricted to designated travel routes. Cross country travel, driving around closed gates and width restriction barriers, and driving on meadows is prohibited.

-All OHVs are required to be registered and display a permit or sticker for riding on public lands.

-Yield to hikers, horses and non-motorized users.

-Pets must be leashed at all times within this recreation area. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors and to protect wildlife.

-Clean up dog waste and dispose of it properly.

-Keep dogs from chasing, harassing, and disturbing wildlife or other visitors.

-Yield to other hikers, horses, and other trail users by stepping off the trail and controlling your dog.

Directions

Elkhorn Trailhead is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Loa, Utah on Thousand Lake mountain. From Loa, travel N/NE on U-72 (paved road) for 12 miles; turn right (east) on FR206 (dirt road) and travel 7.6 miles.  to the campground. Turn right on FR210 for 0.2 miles.
