Virginia Lakes Trailhead

The Virginia Lakes Trailhead is located at the end of Virginia Lakes Road and the adjacent to Big Valley and Little Valley alpine lakes near Bridgeport, California. This is an extremely popular trailhead with hikers, backpackers, equestrians, anglers, and other non-motorized recreation users. This trailhead also serves as an important access point to the Hoover Wilderness and the adjoining Inyo National Forest and Yosemite National Park. Dozens of beautiful alpine lakes await recreationists who seek a wilderness adventure.

June - October, as weather and conditions allow.

Open 24 hours/day

  • Overnight use within the Hoover Wilderness requires a wilderness permit year-round. Please see Recreation.gov for information on obtaining a permit and associated fees.
  • A free California Camp Fire Permit issued by CalFire is required for campfire, barbecue, and portable stove use. 
  • Dogs must be on a leash at the trailhead.

Directions

From Bridgeport travel approximately 12 miles on Highway 395, turn right at Conway Summit on Virginia Lakes Road. Go approximately 6.5 miles on Virginia Lakes Road, the trailhead is at the end of the road.
