Visitor Maps and Guides
The Interactive Forest Map Finder link above is the quickest access to find and purchase the Forest Visitor Maps. The Forest Visitor Maps of each National Forest and Grassland provide forest-wide information on attractions, facilities, services, and opportunities. Some maps are readily available to purchase at your Forest District offices. Please contact the local forest directly to check on availability.
The links found in the Forest Map Finder will take you to the following sites: district offices selling the maps locally, US Geological Survey for online sales, Avenza Map Store for electronic (GeoPDF) maps, and links to the free official Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) displaying roads, trails, and areas open to motor vehicle use in the National Forest.

Historic maps are snapshots of the nation's physical and cultural features at a particular time. Historical maps are often useful to scientists, historians, environmentalists, genealogists and others researching a particular geographic location or area. Select the desired state and scale from the drop-downs. The earliest maps are found at scales no longer used, such as 1:48000.
This Intermountain Region map is available for downloading. It shows the different forest boundaries within the Region, as well as major highways, landmarks and the cities that a Forest Service Office can be located.
The most popular maps for visitors in the Intermountain Region can be found electronically. One mapping system is Avenza Systems. Avenza has made mobile GIS technology available on Apple and Android devices for everybody to use. The PDF Maps app is a geospatial PDF, GeoPDF® and GeoTIFF reader for your Apple iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
Preview, purchase and download maps from the in-app map store. Use maps offline, track locations using GPS, navigate using gestures, plot placemarks and photos, measure distance and much more. Select for Avenza maps.
In addition, an online purchase of these maps can be found through the USGS store or through the pertinent National Forest office it resides on. You may want to call the forest office ahead to check for availability.
A Motorized Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) is a legal document that shows which roads and trails are open to public motor vehicle use. If a road or trail does not appear on the map, it means that it is not open to public motor vehicular use.
The MVUM is a black and white map with no topographic features. It is best used with a Forest Visitor Map or other detailed map. The MVUM will be updated as needed to correct mapping errors or discrepancies and update travel decisions.
If you plan on camping, driving off-highway vehicles, hunting, or exploring the backcountry; please make sure you review the appropriate MVUM to know which routes are open to motor vehicle use. For more information, please visit MVUM Frequently Asked Questions and KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!
Wilderness maps are available for interactive viewing at the Wilderness Connect website sponsored by the University of Montana in sponsorship with the Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and Fish & Wildlife. For Wilderness maps in each of the 12 forests please go to their specific websites found via the Offices webpage. And if you don't find what you need, please call the forest you plan to visit.
