Increased availability of resources has allowed the Incident Management Team to establish a night shift on the Green Fire. Crews and engines from CalFire, beginning today, will provide additional capacity to suppression efforts on the Green Fire.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for the area encompassing the Green Fire beginning Friday at 11 AM, extending through Sunday. The heat will impact fire behavior and will require crews to exercise substantial caution to avoid heat stress and injury.
Fire Activity: Over the last day, the fire has slowly backed downslope into drainages on the east and west flanks of the fire, and toward the Pit River, resulting in the growth of the perimeter of the fire.
Where the fire has reached slopes where it can move uphill, fire behavior has produced runs and tree torching. The volume of smoke produced within the northern area of the fire yesterday precluded the use of aircraft due to the risks associated with poor visibility for flight crews. However, helicopters effectively delivered water drops over a majority of the remaining fire area.
Fire Weather: Thursday through the weekend will be notably hotter signaling the start of an extended warming trend with several days approaching 100 degrees. Northeast winds of approximately 10 mph will continue at night, extending the burning period into the night. Relative humidity of 15 to 20 percent will also be conducive to increased fire behavior. In the northern area of the fire, winds are likely to aid in the dispersal of smoke, making aircraft available to assist crews in suppression efforts. In the evening hours, mixing northerly and southern winds may restrict visibility for aircraft assigned to the fire limiting their availability particularly in the southern area of the fire.
Fire Operations: Today, operational priorities will include the integration of CalFire resources into the existing organization on the Green Fire. On the eastern flank of the fire, handcrews and heavy equipment will build and improve fireline to the north and south along the Rip Gut Ridge. The fireline will extend from the Pit River to the dozer line previously constructed for the Shoe Fire to the north.
On the west flank of the fire, crews will improve access along the 35N02-Brock Mountain Road, using the road as fireline. Heavy equipment will be used to extend the western fireline along a ridge line to the Pit River to the northeast of the Arbuckle Flat area.
Evacuations: Due to fire activity, Shasta County Zone LKH-1448 has been placed under an evacuation warning. Information related to evacuation zones can be found by going to https://protect.genasys.com/search. Shasta County’s new emergency alert and public warning system, AlertShasta, can be found here: https://www.shastacounty.gov/community/page/alertshasta-shasta-countys-new-public-warning-system.
Closures: To ensure firefighter safety and operational efficiency, the Hirz Recreation Complex is now closed to the public until further notice. The area is being used as an additional basecamp for the Green Fire, allowing firefighting crews to reduce travel time, thereby limiting their exposure to risks associated with travel, and improve efficiency of crew suppression efforts.
