Recreation Opportunities

Fishing - River/Stream Info

The McCloud River and its tributaries offer excellent fishing opportunities. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife regularly stocks the Upper McCloud River at Lower Falls with Rainbow trout. Anglers also occasionally catch German brown trout from earlier stockings or those that traveled up
from the McCloud Reservoir, and Brook trout.

Remember that the Bull Trout or Dolly Varden is an
endangered species and should be released if caught.

Swimming Info

For hikers looking to cool off in the summer heat, Cattle Camp Day Use, the Middle Falls, and Lower Falls offer popular swimming holes, for those brave enough to take on the cool waters.

Biking - Mountain Info

Please be courteous and allow space for passing trail users.

Hiking Info

The non-motorized multi-user trail follows the McCloud River for approximately 15 miles beginning at
Lower Falls until its terminus at Algoma Campground. You may also join the trail near the very North
Eastern campsite in the popular Fowler’s Campground. It is rated as an ‘Easy’ hike, but there is one
place along the trail that could prove difficult to some hikers and cyclists, which is the short section of
trail from Middle Falls to the Middle Falls overlook. This is a short switchback section of trail and
involves a little bit of an uphill climb, including stairs.

While walking, please be sure and watch your footing on loose rocks and steep slopes. Children and pets should be kept under close supervision.
