Available layers include Deer Management Assistance Program unit layers, forest type and forest age class layers, roads and timber harvests. More information is included in the user guide:
List of Hunter Roads:
Please note that only the main roads and listed spur roads are open. Side roads are closed to vehicle traffic. Roads may be closed at any time due to weather, unsafe conditions, or to protect resources.
The ANF’s Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) contains current road policy.
Non-motorized use, including hiking, biking, and horseback riding, is always permitted on closed roads. Off-highway vehicle (ATVs, motorcycles) use is not permitted off of the designated ATV trail system at any time.

MVUM, Visitor, Topographical, and Hydrographic Maps
The MVUM displays:
- National Forest System (NFS) roads, trails, or areas designated open to motorized travel
- Allowed uses by vehicle class (ex. highway-legal vehicles, vehicles 50 inches or less in width and motorcycles)
- Seasonal allowances
Routes not shown on the MVUM are not open to public motor vehicle travel. Routes designated for motorized use may not always be signed on the ground but will be identified on the MVUM. It will be the public’s responsibility to reference the MVUM to stay on designated roads, trails, and areas open to motor vehicle use.
The MVUM will be updated annually to correct mapping errors and update travel decisions.
The MVUM is a black and white map with no topographic features. It is a map for legal designations of where you can travel with various motorized vehicles, but for additional reference it is best used in conjunction with other detailed maps. The MVUM is free to the public at each local office. The MVUM is available on this website and sections of it may be printed from your home computer.
There are two ways to get a copy of an MVUM:
- Visit the Interactive Visitor Map, which shows recreation areas and roads on all national forests. The map is now available for mobile download, look for "Visitor Map: Map of Forest Service Lands". Once you zoom into Pennsylvania the information for the Allegheny National Forest will start to appear. This version is in full color.
- Download a pdf version to your computer.
A quadrangle map location diagram for quad maps is available as a pdf.
"Topographic Maps" provide the greatest level of detail and only cover small portions of a forest. The maps are available for download or purchase from the US Geological Survey website.
These maps are at a scale of 2.64 inches equals 1 mile and are in a 7 ½’ latitude by 7 ½’ longitude quadrangle format. They were derived from the U.S. Geological Survey Topographic Quadrangles, are highly detailed, and serve as the base for all other Allegheny National Forest maps. Topography is shown with a contour interval of 10 or 20 feet or 5 meters. See Allegheny quad map index to select map located on the Allegheny Map Order Form.
Topographical maps show topography of an area, boundaries between private and federal land, most roads and trails, and all water systems. For a map that shows the most up-to-date road and motorized trail information see the information on obtaining a Motor Vehicle Use Map.
Forest Recreation Map: "Visitor Maps" for each national forest and grassland provide forest-wide information on attractions, facilities, services, and opportunities. These maps are available to purchase from any Forest office or the US Geological Survey website.
This is a map of the entire Forest at a scale of ½ inch equals 1 (one) mile. It shows the road system, trails, wilderness areas, lakes, streams, developed recreation sites including camp and picnic grounds and boat landings, winter sports areas, points of interest including waterfalls, and other information beneficial to visitors. This map includes the North Country National Scenic Trail, winter recreation, snowmobiling, wildlife, canoeing, hunting, fishing and more. (2008 Edition.)
The forest visitor maps show property boundaries, private and public land, recreation areas and day use areas, major roads and towns, and major water systems. These maps DO NOT show all existing Forest Service roads. For a map that shows the most up to date road and motorized trail information see the information on obtaining a Motor Vehicle Use Maps.
This map covers the subsurface structure of the Allegheny Reservoir. The entire impoundment, both in Pennsylvania and New York, is included. Printed on waterproof and tearproof paper.
