Cole Creek Trail

Cole Creek Trail winds through scenic Ozark hill country of oak and pine, native grass fields, bottomland hardwoods, and vistas of the Gasconade River.  Remnants of old farmsteads give glimpses to the past. 

Four trail loops are open for horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers.  There are 3 ponds on or near the trail.

Yellow Loop

This is one of the original trail sections and can be accessed at the Cole Creek Trailhead. This loop does not connect to any other loops. In several locations you will cross or travel near Highway K.

  • Length: 5.9 miles
  • Trail Marker: Yellow Diamonds

Orange Loop

This is one of the original trail sections and can be accessed at the Cole Creek Trailhead. As you head north you will intersect with the Blue Loop. 

  • Length: 5.3 miles
  • Trail Marker: Orange Diamonds

Blue Loop

This section can be accessed on the north end of the Orange Loop and will take you near the Gasconade River. it connects to the Red Loop in two locations near Village Drive, and connects to the Red Loop near the Gasconade River via the Green Connector Trail.

Red Loop

The Red Loop is the northernmost loop on the trail and connects to the Blue Loop via the Green Connector Trail near the Gasconade River, or directly connects to the Blue Loop near Village Drive.

General Information

Camping

Dispersed camping is allowed along the trail. There are no toilets, no structures, no trash cans, no treated water, and no fire grates available.

Private Property - There are several locations along the trail where it is near or abuts private land. Please make sure you are on Federal land when choosing a campsite.

Safety:

  • During temperate months, be prepared for biting insects, poison ivy and high temperatures.
  • A good map and compass , along with knowledge of utilizing these, are strongly suggested.
  • Be aware of hunting seasons.

Permits

  • No forest recreation permits are needed to access this trail.

Open water sources along the trail are not recommended for drinking. Bring your own drinking water or be prepared to boil or treat water chemically.

On the Trail

  • No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail or past designated parking areas.
  • Camping is allowed along the trail.
    • Camp 100 feet away from trails and water sources.
    • Human waste (Feces) must be buried at least 6 inches deep and covered.
    • Pack out all of your garbage.
  • Dogs are allowed on hiking trails, please ensure they are under control.
    • Leashing is encouraged. Unleashed dogs can pose a danger to other pets, the natural resources of the area, wildlife, and other forest visitors.
    • Yield your leashed dog around other hikers and horses.
    • Pack out your dogs waste or bury it 100 feet from water and trails.

At the Trailheads

  • No overnight camping in day use areas/trailheads at any time of year.
  • Dogs must be on a 6 foot leash in the day use area
  • No trash containers; please pack out all your trash.
  • Fireworks are prohibited.
  • Horses may not be tied directly to trees.
