Fire Management

Fire management combines elements of fire prevention, fire suppression and fire use.

Wildland fire is inevitable in North American ecosystems. Most wildland fire must be suppressed to meet resource and social objectives. Wise use of fire approximates the historical role of fire and enhances long-term wildland values.

Effectively managing forest fuels and dealing with wildfires requires coordination in northern Colorado among the US Forest Service, the Colorado State Forest Service, local counties, Jeffco Tanker Base, the Fort Collins Interagency Dispatch and Aviation Center and local communities.

Fire Suppression

Find out about our firefighting program and forces, including the Roosevelt Interagency Hotshot Crew on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland. The Northern Colorado Interagency Helitack, Fort Collins Interagency Dispatch and Aviation Center and the Jefferson County Tanker Base are also located on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland.

Fire Hire

The Forest Service hires permanent and seasonal firefighters. Look for job series #0462, which includes most fire-related jobs, when searching Rocky Mountain Region, USAJobs. Additional information is available for the Roosevelt Hotshots positions.

Fuels Management

To protect homes, and improve the health of the forest and wildlife habitat, we use several methods to reduce forest vegetation (fuels), where the forest may be subject to an intense, destructive wildland fire. These include both mechanical hazardous fuels treatment projects and prescribed fire. One major effort is the Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership (FRFTP) taking place from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. There are multiple projects, including those within the FRFTP, taking place on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland (ARP).
