Rail SystemsCurbsNot all trail bridges require rail systems. The designer should conduct an analysis of the bridge and determine whether a rail system is truly required or whether a curb could be installed instead. For example, if an analysis shows that the potential hazards along the trail are the same as or greater than the hazards of a bridge without a rail system, curbs may be used. The use of a curb to replace a rail system should be well documented and included in the design folder for the trail bridge. All trail bridges that do not have a rail system must have a curb.
