Discover Your National Forests
The Green Mountain and the Finger Lakes National Forests offer sprawling quintessential northeastern woodland settings in Vermont (Green Mountains) and New York (Finger Lakes).
Whether to hike, ski, or admire the fall foliage, diverse recreation opportunities draw in visitors year-round.
Fishing
Fishing is allowed on the Green Mountain & Finger Lakes National Forests with valid state fishing licenses and within appropriate season dates.
Know Before You Go
Mud Season
Warmer temperatures, spring rain and deep, frozen ground make it difficult for the landscape to absorb water. So, it pools on the surface of your favorite trails and roads making hiking or vehicular travel difficult.
Roads
Most Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forest Roads are closed until mid-spring. Please refer to the Motor Vehicle Use Maps for a list of seasonal and special vehicle designations.
Reservations
Select campsites and pavilions offer reservations on Recreation.gov during the summer recreation season, which generally runs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Sites can only be reserved at least 4 days in advance and 6-month rolling booking window allows users to book a reservation within 6 months of the booking date.
