| Title: |
Genotypic Variation in White
Ash
|
| Objective: |
To evaluate growth and survival of white ash collected from
45 geographic sources. |
| Year Established: |
1976 |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Fernow Experimental Forest
McGowan Mtn. Rd. ~1/2 mile south of junction with the Main Fernow
Loop Rd.
lat: N39deg 02min 02sec, long: W79deg 41min 08sec. latitude,
longitude, and elevation (feet) is documented for each seedling
source.
Soil is mapped as Mechesville silt loam with limestone influence.
8-15% slope.
Elevation: ~2720'.
Planted 10 X 10 spacing 5-tree plots.
Cleared 8.5 acres of previously 70-yr old mixed hardwoods including
black cherry, northern red oak, yellow poplar, sugar maple,
and white ash. |
| Statistical Design: |
Random Block Design. 5 blocks, 5-tree plots, 45 families. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
Trees were planted using Auger during 1979. Corners of all
blocks were marked with 4-foot long 5/8" iron rod and a brass
numbered mine check was placed next to the 1st tree in each
5-tree plot with a #9 wire pin: 1976.
Release of seedlings with Hoffco MP 670 brush cutter: 1977,
1978, 1980, 1982. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Seedling height measured to the nearest 0.05' and stem diameter
at ground level was measured to the nearest 0.05 cm. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Independent: Growth, height growth to nearest 0.05', and diameter
growth at ground level to nearest 0.05cm., survival, disease
and insect incidence.
Survival and total seedling heights 1976.
Survival and total height after 2,3,4,5 years (1977,1978,1979,
1980) and at 5 year intervals thereafter.
Dependent: White ash geographic source (12 states).
Total height, diameter at 1" above ground, and d.b.h. on trees
>4.5' tall.
|
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data are visually compared to previously collected data. Accuracy
assessments are completed after each data-collection period.
Permanent employee continually supervises temporary employees. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw: stand structure and grade, species, d.b.h., and number
of stems available on DG. Species, d.b.h., And number of stems
are in hardcopy. Data are downloaded to PCs for analyses. |
