Range-Wide Sugar Maple Provenance
Study

1) To determine the nature and extent of genetic variation
within and between provenances throughout the range of sugar
maple.
2) To compare juvenile and mature performance within provenances. |

| Site Description: |
Fernow Experimental Forest
on Fork Mountain ~200' southwest of the NE corner of the Fernow.
lat, long, and elev.(feet) are documented for each provenance.
Soils: DeKalb Channery loam
Slight easterly aspect with slope of 5-15%.
Prior to clearcut of 1968, there was an oak site index of 70
and was occupied by second growth hardwoods with red oak, yellow
poplar, sugar maple, black birch, white ash, and others. |
| Statistical Design: |
Randomized block design with the long dimension parallel with
the contour contiguously replicated 5 times.
14 provenances, each represented by 7 or 8 parent trees were
randomly planted (in 2-tree plots) in each block. Trees were
spaced 5' X 5'.
14 Sugar Maple seed sources were planted in 5 contiguous
replications. 224 Trees were planted in each of the 5 replications.

| Experimental Treatments: |
Clearcut 1968: sawlogs and pulpwood were skidded from the
area. Area is ~1.5 acres (700' long by 100' wide) was prepared
for planting using mulch. Trees were planted in 1968. Following
planting, each tree was mulched with a 2.5' square of 6-mil
black plastic. A screen cylinder made of 1/4" hardware cloth,
6" in diameter and 18" high, was placed around each tree 1968
to protect the stems from rodents. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Auger was used with a 12" diameter bit during planting. Total
height is the distance between ground surface and tip of dominant
leader. |

Independent: Provenance, parent.
Dependent: filled seed, dry seed weight, seedling mortality,
diameter growth, height growth, forking, crown size, onset
and break dormancy, photoperiodic response, cold injury, drought
and heat damage, sap sugar content, wood properties.
Seedling survival: 2 months, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972,
1974.
Stem height and stem diameter (1" above root collar): 1970,
1971.
Survival and height: 1971, 1972, 1974, 1994.
Sap sugar measurements - replications 1 & 5: 1975, 1976.
All replications: 1977, 1978.
Total height, stem diameter, and survival: 1982, 1994.

Data are visually compared to previously collected data. Accuracy
assessments are completed after each data-collection period.
Permanent employee continually supervises temporary employees |
| Data Storage: |
Raw: stand structure and grade, species, d.b.h., and number
of stems available on DG. Species, d.b.h., And number of stems
are in hardcopy. Data are downloaded to PCs for analyses. |
