| Title: |
Applying Group Selection
in Central Appalachian Hardwoods
|
| Objective: |
To develop practical guidelines for using the group selection
practice on a sustained yield basis. |
| Year Established: |
1990 |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Location on the Fernow Experimental Forest is compartment
60 at Stonelick. NRO with site index of 70.
Assume annual per acre board foot growth of 300 (International)
thus at 31 acres, 20 year totals 186,000 board feet total volume
(ideal). |
| Statistical Design: |
Case History as stands become available. Initially will concentrate
on NRO site indices.
First area: 31 acres in size on a 20-year cutting cycle with
a site index of 70 for oak. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
Group selection cuts applied to individual cases. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Regeneration will be quantified as related to openings, the
area between openings, and the total stand. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Independent: group selection regeneration methods
Dependent: stand reproduction and yields
Remeasurements are on a 2-, 5-, 7-, and 10-year basis and
at 5-year intervals thereafter until the next cutting period.
|
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data are visually compared to previously collected data. Accuracy
assessments are completed after each data-collection period.
Permanent employee continually supervises temporary employees. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw: stand structure and grade, species, d.b.h., and number
of stems available on DG.
Species, d.b.h., And number of stems are in hardcopy. Data are
downloaded to PCs for analyses. |
| Global Change Research Applications: |
