| Title: |
Crop Tree Release (Two-Age
Management) in Mature Appalachian Hardwood Stands
|
| Objective: |
To evaluate individual tree and stand response when applying
a crown release to 80- to 85-year-old codominant crop trees
growing on an excellent Appalachian hardwood site. |
| Year Established: |
1990 |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Fernow Experimental Forest, compartment 16A |
| Statistical Design: |
Case history: designed to establish 4 6-acre adjacent units.
Each unit will receive a separate treatment. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
1) All sawtimber-size trees (11.0" d.b.h. plus) were cut using
the crop tree-crown touching approach.
2) Cut all merchantable sawtimber trees (no culls present) except
the crop trees.
3) Cut all sawtimber trees using crown-touching.
4) Cut all pole-size trees 5.0" to 0.9" d.b.h. and cut all trees
1.0" d.b.h. Plus except crop trees. |
| Sampling Methods: |
|
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Independent: crop tree release technique and two-age management.
Dependent: tree d.b.h., quality, crown development, reproduction,
volume, and basal area.
Periodic measurement will be recorded for initial, post logging,
2-yr, 5-yr, 7-yr, 10-yr, and 5-yr thereafter until next treatment
period.
|
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data are visually compared to previously collected data. Accuracy
assessments are completed after each data-collection period.
Permanent employee continually supervises temporary employees. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw: stand structure and grade, species, d.b.h., and number
of stems available on DG.
Species, d.b.h., And number of stems are in hardcopy. Data are
downloaded to PCs for analyses. |
| Global Change Research Applications: |
