| Title: |
Crop Tree Demonstration Areas
|
| Objective: |
To provide several crop tree demonstration areas for a variety
of stands and landowner objectives. |
| Year Established: |
1989 |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
1. Coopers Rock State Park, east of Morgantown, WV: 10 acres
with 5 2-acre plots with 21 crop trees per acre.
2. Camp Creek State Forest (WV).
3. Savage River State Forest (MD): 16 year old upland oak stand
(predominately northern red oak, scarlet oak, white oak, chestnut
oak, red maple with black cherry, white ash, yellow poplar-cucumber)
with a site index of 70 for northern red oak. |
| Statistical Design: |
Demonstration Area, no standard statistical design for this
study. Case history with untreated 2-acre plots. Treatment is
based upon landowner objectives. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
Treatment is based upon landowner objective. Examples include
crop tree release and SILVAH management (thinning to reduce
basal area). |
| Sampling Methods: |
Individual tree information is monitored and evaluated as
related to study treatment. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Independent: Timber, wildlife, and aesthetic and aesthetic
crop tree treatments. Also, SILVAH, thinning and uncut (control)
treatments.
Dependent: growth response for trees: d.b.h., total height,
epicormic branches, butt-log grade.
Remeasurement schedule post logging 2-yr, 5-yr, 10-yr, and at
5-yr intervals thereafter until next treatment.
Coopers Rock Demonstration Area only: 1988 all trees >5.0"
d.b.h. were tallied by species and 2" d.b.h. class as merchantable,
cull, or dead.
|
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data are visually compared to previously collected data. Accuracy
assessments are completed after each data-collection period.
Permanent employee continually supervises temporary employees. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw: stand structure and grade, species, d.b.h., and number
of stems available on DG.
Species, d.b.h., And number of stems are in hardcopy. Data are
downloaded to PCs for analyses. |
