Title: |
Study of Partial Cuttings
of Sawlogs on Bear Tree Plots
|
Objective: |
1) To determine the response of the chief species of species
groups in the residual stand in terms of growth in diameter
and yield in volume.
2) To determine the loss of growing stock due to logging and
natural mortality following cutting.
3) To determine the amount, species and quality of ingrowth
of sapling regeneration following sawlog cuttings. |
Year Established: |
1933 |
Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
Site Description: |
Northwest corner of compartment 19 on Kane Experimental Forest
- Elk County, PA. Stands are a mixture of beech-birch-maple-cherry
which had followed clearcutting. When treated in 1933, the stands
were about 40 years old with a few holdover beech and hemlock
ranging from 80 to 190 years old. |
Statistical Design: |
2 1-acre plots (plot 1 and plot 2) were divided in half (0.5-acre
subplot was thinned, 0.5-acre was not cut). 1 2-acre plot (plot
3) was divided into 4 0.5-acre subplots (2 0.5-acre subplots
were thinned, 2 0.5-acre subplots were not cut). 2 large plots
(12 acres and 8 acres) were used as natural, untreated control
areas for the study. The 2-acre block #3 was removed from the
study during 1980. |
Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
Experimental Treatments: |
Plots were thinned in 1933 and 1954: some areas were thinned
during both years. |
Sampling Methods: |
Original study complete yet measurements continue to be taken.
In 1978, 100% inventory was made on all unnumbered trees. In
1982, plots were renumbered for organizational purposes. |
Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Species, tree number, diameter, height, crown class: 1933,
1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1959, 1964, 1978, 1984 (crown class
replaced by frequency during 1984).
Tree age and condition:1933.
Tree vigor and quality: 1953.
Tally of all trees >1": 1959, 1964. |
QA/QC Practices: |
Data visually checked during computer entry. |
Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand. Annually,
the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program in DG
Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside in
a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text files. |
Global Change Research Applications: |
