| Title: |
Environmental Factors Affecting
Advance Regeneration of Allegheny Hardwoods
|
| Objective: |
1) To compare the establishment and growth of 10 species of
forest plants under varying levels of light exposure and soil
moisture.
2) To isolate the effects of light exposure, soil moisture,
temperature and soil chemical content so that the contribution
of each can be determined. |
| Year Established: |
1970 |
| Year Completed: |
1976 |
| Site Description: |
Kane Experimental Forest. Stand was 75 years old in 1976. |
| Statistical Design: |
4 blocks each contained 4 plots replicated twice over time
(2-years). |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
For each of the plots either 0, 33, 67, or 100 percent of
the basal area has been removed by cutting. Half of each 10'
x 10' plot was scarified, half unscarified. Seeds of each of
the 10 species were sown on each half plot and seedling responses
will be measured over the following 2 growing seasons. Artificial
watering was accomplished via sprinkler systems. Measurements
of light, moisture, temperature, and soil chemical content will
be obtained to aid in interpretation of study results. The study
area was fenced to exclude deer. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Seed germination and mortality taken by treatment. Annual
height growth was measured. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Independent: Part I (1st year); light exposure and soil moisture.
Part II (2nd year); light exposure, soil moisture, soil temperature,
soil chemical content, and seedbed condition.
Dependent: germination and mortality: 1972,1973; height growth;
and dry matter production of black cherry, pin cherry, sugar
maple, red maple, white ash, yellow birch, beech hemlock;
hay-scented fern, and short-husk grass.
100% inventory of surviving species and d.b.h. were taken
on control plots only 1976.
|
| QA/QC Practices: |
Area has remained fenced since 1970. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand. Annually,
the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program in DG
Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside in
a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text files. |
