| Title: |
Methods of Cutting Allegheny
Hardwoods, Little Arnot Plots 1-4
|
| Objective: |
To determine the effect of cutting method on growth of the
remaining stand and on subsequent reproduction in the Allegheny
Hardwoods. |
| Year Established: |
1927 |
| Year Completed: |
Plots 1,2,3: 1972; Plot 4 expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Near Little Arnot Creek, Warren County, Pennsylvania (Mead
Township) within the Allegheny National Forest. Plots were predominately
hemlock prior to 1868. In 1927, the stand had very few hemlock
trees and comprised a high percentage of sugar and red maple,
yellow birch, beech, black cherry, ash and basswood. Elevation
ranges from 85' to 270' and estimated slopes range from 15%
to 80%. Plots 1, 2 and 4 lie on a S45E facing slope while plot
3 faces due East. Soil conditions for each horizon are similar
for all plots. Soil acidity ranged from 5.10 pH to 7.29 pH. |
| Statistical Design: |
4 1-acre plots |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |

| Experimental Treatments: |
Plot 1:
Large, mature and over-mature tree were selectively removed:
1927 Diseased and poorly-formed pole-size stems and old defective
beech were removed for chemical wood: 1929 to 1930. Hurricane
strike - stand destroyed: 1972.
Plot 2:
Control plot. 5 hemlocks were cut prior to plot establishment
in 1927. Hurricane strike - stand destroyed: 1972.
Plot 3:
Minimum diameter limit cut applied (8" for beech and sugar
maple, 14" for cherry, ash and basswood): 1972. Large trees
marked for chemical wood were removed: 1928. Hurricane strike
- stand destroyed: 1972.
Plot 4:
Merchantable sawlogs were removed: 1927. All remaining trees
were cut with the exception of 24 trees, 8 of which died before
1932: 1929.
|
| Sampling Methods: |
During 1927, 100% inventory of all trees on 4 plots were taken
before and after cutting. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
100% inventory of all 4 plots: species, d.b.h, frequency:
1927, 1937, 1947, 1958.
100% inventory of plot 4 only: species, d.b.h, frequency: 1972,
1978, 1984, 1989. |
| QA/QC Practices: |
Data visually checked during computer entry. Camera points
are maintained every 5 years. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand. Annually,
the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program in DG
Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside in
a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text |
