| Objective: |
1) To determine the amount of damage to the understory caused
by the removal of a holdover stand.
2) To determine the effect of complete exposure on the survival
of various species in the understory.
3) To determine the effect of cutting back the understory in
order to produce a seedling sprout stand and to influence stand
composition.
4) To serve as a roadside demonstration of shelterwood and the
cutting back of advance growth. |

| Site Description: |
The plots (4 + 5) are located on Compartment 11 in the Kane
Experimental Forest. Plot 4 lies 1 chain south of the Seven
Mile Road an 1.5 chains west of the road to the Lockheiser special
use. Site elevation is 2040' and gradient is uniform of about
1% to the south. Soil is Clymer silt loam which is recognized
as being relatively fertile. In 1937, the understory was dense
w/ tolerant species and the overstory was considered old growth. |

| Experimental Treatments: |
Sawlogs and cordwood were removed from overstory: 1937. Understory
on subplots 2 and 4 was mowed to produce an even-canopied stand
in which the trees will train each other, and to favor the vigorously
sprouting maples and cherries at the expense of the less desirable
and weakly sprouting beeches and birches: 1938. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Before treatment, 1937, 1) d.b.h. was measured for all trees
> 3.5" in diameter, 2) complete reproduction tallies were made
on each of the 4 subplots, 3) photo points were established. |

100% inventory: species, d.b.h., frequency: 1978, 1984. |

| Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand. Annually,
the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program in DG
Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside in
a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text files. |
