| Title: |
Herbicide-Shelterwood Trials
|
| Objective: |
1) test herbicide-shelterwood sequence at a semicommercial
scale on a variety of sites,
2) gather information on costs of herbicide application, and
3) gain experience with mechanized ground application technique. |
| Year Established: |
1979 |
| Year Completed: |
1986 |
| Site Description: |
The study is located on the lands of the Allegheny National
Forest (PA), International Paper Company, PA Bureau of Forestry. |
| Statistical Design: |
8 20-acre treatment plots each contains 20 0.001-acre regeneration
plots for a total of 160 regeneration plots. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
999 |
| Experimental Treatments: |
10 acres of each plot were treated with 1#/A ai Roundup during
August 1979 and the remainder 10 acres were untreated. The entire
20-acre stand was cut leaving a residual basal area of 60% within
2 years after spraying Roundup. Fern and grass control, and
establishment and growth of hardwood seedlings were observed
until stocking was adequate. |
| Sampling Methods: |
In regeneration plots, all woody commercial and noncommercial
species were measured by height class 1) and 2) <1', 1'-3',
3'-5', >5' and 3) <0.1',<1', 1'-3', 3'-5', >5'. Herbaceous
cover was also measured in regeneration plots. |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
Seedling counts by species and height class, and herbaceous
cover.: 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1986. |
| QA/QC Practices: |
Safety regulations were followed with all herbicide use. |
| Data Storage: |
Raw data by plot reside on DG and tally sheets are kept with
written instructions and detailed maps to each stand. Annually,
the raw data are transformed using the REGEN1 program in DG
Info. System. Summarized data by plot and by stand reside in
a DG-based program that can output to ASCII text files. |
