Title:
Economic Control Plots
Objective: To monitor growth and quality changes in mature oak-hickory stands.

Site Description: Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest approximately 39 deg. 12 min N lat., 82 deg. 24 min. W. long. 2 of the 3 plots are at about 900' in elevation while 1 of the 3 plots is at about 700'. The plots are located on middle to lower slope positions with north or east aspect and site index from 70 to 80 for Black Oak. The trees on the plots are about 120 years old and are composed of mixed oaks.
Statistical Design: 3 1-acre plots
Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: 100%
Experimental Treatments: control plots; no treatments.
Sampling Methods: All trees >3.6" d.b.h. on both plots were initially and subsequently inventoried by species and diameter at 4.5' above the ground. Every 5 years all trees >3.6' d.b.h. are evaluated for actual tree grade, merchantable height, number of 16' logs, number of 4' bolts and percent cull/defect. Data collected are divided into two principal areas: 1) Tree Growth/Volume (represented by species, d.b.h., and merchantable height) and 2) Tree Grade/Quality (represented by species, d.b.h., merchantable height, actual tree grade, number of 16' logs, number of 4' bolts and defects).
Variables and Sampling Frequency: d.b.h. to nearest 0.1": 1973, 1974, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1988, 1992, 1993. 
Height: 1978, 1981, 1983, 1988. 
Actual tree grade (USFS standard): 1973, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1988. 
Cull, sweep and rot (%): 1973, 1981, 1983, 1988.
Number of 16' logs: 1978, 1981, 1983, 1988. 
Number of 4' bolts: 1978, 1981, 1983, 1988.
QA/QC Practices: Field data are verified when entered into computer. Field crews were trained by experienced field personnel.
Data Storage: Only raw data collected after 1976 are available. Only summaries are available for data collected prior to 1976. Available data are maintained in an ORACLE database (SASQUATCH) according to the following categories: study description, stand density plot data, plot history, plot summaries, ingrowth summaries, plot treatments, species descriptions, ecological data, size of opening data. Hardcopy of some tally sheets are maintained in file cabinets.
