Catalog #65
| Title: |
Cutting Practices Demonstration
|
| Objective: |
To demonstrate various harvest cutting methods used in the
upland oak forest type. |
| Year Established: |
1953 and 1957, varies per stand |
| Year Completed: |
expected to continue |
| Site Description: |
Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest near McArthur, OH. Approximately
39 deg. 11.5 min N lat., 82 deg. 24 min. W. long. Elevation
ranges 800' to 900'. Plots straddle an east-west running ridge
that gives each plot north/south aspect and ridge/middle slope
characteristics. Soils are Germano-Gilpin complex on southerly
aspects and Steinsburg-Gilpin complex on northerly aspects.
Depth of 'A' horizon ranged from 0" to 11" and 0" to 7" respectively
and texture is sandy to silty loam with frequent rock outcrops.
Slopes range from 6% to 70%. |
| Statistical Design: |
6 rectangular 5-acre plots with 66' wide isolation strips
on all sides. |
| Likelihood of Locating Study Areas: |
100% |
| Experimental Treatments: |
Each 5-acre plot received a single treatment. The six plot
treatments were: 1) commercial clear-cut, 2) diameter limit
cut, 3) selection cut, 4) complete clear-cut, 4) selection cut
with timber stand improvement (TSI), and 6) commercial clear-cut
with TSI. |
| Sampling Methods: |
Data collected are divided into two principal areas: 1) Tree
Growth/Volume (represented by species, d.b.h., and crown class)
and 2) Tree Grade/Quality (represented by species, d.b.h., height
to first fork, actual and potential tree grade, grading section
and surface defects). |
| Variables and Sampling Frequency: |
d.b.h. to nearest 0.1": 1956, 1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1979,
1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1990.
Merchantable height: 1976, 1990.
Crown class: 1956, 1990.
Actual tree grade (USFS standard): 1990.
Potential tree grade (USFS standard): 1990.
Cull, sweep and rot (%): 1990. Height to 1st fork: 1990.
Surface detect by grading section: 1990. |
| QA/QC Practices: |
Field data are verified when entered into computer. Field
crews were trained by experienced field personnel. |
| Data Storage: |
Only raw data collected after 1976 are available. Only summaries
are available for data collected prior to 1976. Available data
are maintained in an ORACLE database (SASQUATCH) according to
the following categories: study description, stand density plot
data, plot history, plot summaries, ingrowth summaries, plot
treatments, species descriptions, ecological data, size of opening
data. Hardcopy of some tally sheets are maintained in file cabinets. |
