Projects

The Salmon-Challis National Forest will no longer send mass email communications regarding proposed projects. Individual project websites containing project information and documentation will remain available on the Salmon-Challis National Forest Projects website,  https://www.fs.usda.gov/r04/salmon-challis/projects. Comments may be submitted electronically by selecting "Comment/Object on Project" under "Get Connected" on a project's website. Electronic comment submission will be available only during the open comment period listed in the project description. Comments may also be submitted through email or mail. Please check the Salmon-Challis National Forest Projects website regularly to stay up-to-date on proposed Forest projects.

The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.

The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.

Salmon-Challis National Forest Projects

2026 North Fork Sheep Creek Placer

The proposal is to authorize placer mining activities for gold in the North Fork of Sheep Creek area of the North Fork Ranger District. Up to approximately 100 cubic yards of material would be processed over a five year period.

Bench Timber Sale

250-acre salvage sale

Challis Backyard Trails

Project proposes 32 miles of new motorized and non-motorized trail construction seven miles west of Challis, ID.

Deep Rabbit Fuel Break

This project aims to proactively reduce hazardous fuels across two fuel breaks.

Kelly Creek Bridge

This project proposes to replace a stream ford crossing with a bridge on USFS Trail No 4323 to improve access for recreationalists and address ESA fish species habitat concerns.

Lucky Horseshoe REE Drilling

The Forest Service proposes to authorize mineral exploration drilling activities for locatable minerals on NFS lands as outlined in the Operator's Plan of Operations. Three drill pads are proposed over a 12-month period

Mill Creek Sanitation

This purpose of the project is to remove both infested and adjacent uninfested trees to prevent future insect outbreaks and improve the stand's ability to resist other insect and diseases. Up to 250-acres of commercial sanitation harvest is proposed.

New Leadore Station Conveyance and Cyprus Hill Decommission

The Forest Service proposes to convey or dispose of the New Leadore Ranger Station and to decommission the Cyprus House.

Peel Tree Vegetation Project

Commercially harvest up to 850 acres to decrease timber stand susceptibility to insects attacks and limit the spread of dwarf mistletoe.

Sheep Creek Trail Connector

The Salmon-Challis proposes to construct 1.8 miles of new motorized trail to reconnect FS Trail #6126 to FS Road #60078.

Shoup Land Exchange

Land exchange between the Forest Service and a private party

Twelve Mile Trail Construction

Construction of new trails in the Twelvemile Creek drainage.

Twin Peaks Trail Designation

The Salmon-Challis National Forest is proposing to redesignate Route #60413-E as a motorized trail, open to all vehicles. Project information can be found at: https://usfs-public.box.com/s/jg9pbxxd4l0t6g2n759k3x63ulafu2cb
