Water Activities

The Kootenai National Forest offers a multitude of recreational opportunities on the water. Check out our wide range of great locations!

Boating - Motorized

The Kootenai National Forest has many great options for motorized boating adventures. There are several larger lakes spread across the Forest, along with the Koocanusa and Clark Fork Reservoirs, that are great spots for motorized boats and provide boat launches for easy access.

Important boating reminders:

  • All watercraft operating on public lakes and reservoirs in the area that are 35 acres or less of surface water are limited to no-wake speed.
  • All watercraft operating on public lakes and reservoirs greater than 35 surface acres are limited to no-wake speed from the shoreline to 200 feet from the shoreline (with the exception of those towing a skier from dock or shore).
  • Some public lakes, regardless of size, may be posted as no-wake lake or closed to motorized boats. Please check all posted signs.

All boating regulations are implemented and enforced by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Please check with their webpage for detailed information on boating regulations and safety.

Boating - Non-Motorized

All lakes and streams on the Kootenai National Forest are open to non-motorized boating activities. Quieter opportunities can be found at smaller lakes and streams.

  • Motorized boating is prohibited in any Cabinet Mountain Wilderness lakes and streams.
  • Always be sure to check for any posted restrictions including non-motorized, no wake, or closures.
