Copper King Fire Salvage

Salvage of dead and dying trees on approximately 1708 acres within the Copper King Fire perimeter. Project also includes cutting danger trees along roads and tree planting on approximately 6000 acres. At the time of public scoping, the Forest had not fully assessed the urgency of implementing the project in early summer 2017. Based on further evaluation of post-fire environmental conditions, the Lolo National Forest has requested an Emergency Situation Determination (ESD) from the Chief of the Forest Service. 36 CFR 218.21(b) defines an emergency situation as "a situation on National Forest System (NFS) lands for which immediate implementation of a decision is necessary to achieve one or more of the following: 1) relief from hazards threatening human health and safety; 2) mitigation of threats to natural resources on NFS or adjacent lands; 3) avoiding a loss of commodity value sufficient to jeopardize the agency's ability to accomplish project objectives directly related to resource protection or restoration." If granted, an ESD would waive the 45-day pre-decisional administrative review process, commonly referred to as the objection period. If an ESD is granted, the 30-day comment period on the Environmental Assessment would be the last opportunity to engage with the Forest Service prior to a decision. If an ESD is not granted, the opportunity to object to the project would remain.
