Big Nelson Campground

This campground, on the shoreline of Cooper's Lake near Ovando, Montana, is a semi-remote, developed campground which offers shady rest and a beautiful view of the lake and adjacent mountains. The Bob Marshall and Scapegoat wildernesses are 7 miles away by trail. Big Nelson has tent camping only. No camping is allowed in the parking lot and no trailers are permitted.

Current Conditions
Open year-round. No reservations are taken. The campground is first-come, first-served.

General Information

A picnic table and fire ring is available at each campsite. 19 miles to groceries and gas. Pack out your own trash. Fishing and primitive boat launch on Cooper's Lake. 7 miles by trail to Bob Marshall and Scapegoat wildernesses. Patrolling volunteer campground hosts. Periodic law enforcement patrols.

Tent camping only. No trailers and no camping in the parking lot. Food storage orders are in place. Please see our Bear Safety and Food storage Information for important information about food storage to protect you and the bears from unwanted encounters.

At this time we are not charging any use fees at this recreation site.

Directions

From the junction of Montana highways 83 and 20 (also known as "Clearwater Junction") travel east on Montana nighway 200 for 19.5 miles. Turn north on North Fork Blackfoot Road #5550 and follow the signs 12 miles on a gravel road to the campground.
