Coxcomb #132
The Coxcomb Trail #132 begins at an intersection with the Middle Fork Trail #227 and ends at an intersection with the Wetterhorn Basin Trail #226. The trail intersects the Middle Fork Trail at approximately 11,505 feet and crosses the Middle Fork Cimarron River. It head west as it switchbacks and continues to climb to an elevation of 12,400 feet in approximately 1.4 miles. It turns south and sweeps southwest climbing to an elevation of about 12,640 cutting just south of Coxcomb Peak which rises to 13,656 feet. At an elevation of 12,800 it begins to descend and reaches a series of switchbacks at approximately 1.5 miles. It continues to descend and intersects the Wetterhorn Basin Trail in approximately 2.1 miles. The entire length of this trail is in the Uncompahgre Wilderness where Wilderness Regulations apply.
General Information
From Montrose:
Follow U.S. Hwy 50 for approximately 20.5 miles to the intersection with County Road 858. Turn south on CR 858 and continue for approximately 18.7 miles to Silver Jack Reservoir. County Road 858 becomes Forest Service Road #858 at the forest boundary. Continue on FSR #858 for approximately 1 mile, past Forest Service Road #863, to Forest Service Road #861.1. Turn right and follow FSR 861.1 for approximately 4.6 miles to where the Middle Fork Trail begins. Follow the Middle Fork Trail for approximately 4.1 miles to its intersection with the Coxcomb Trail.
