Difficulty Creek #214

The Difficulty Creek Trail #214 begins at its intersection with the Dexter Creek Trail #205 and ends at its intersection with the Horsethief Trail #215. The elevation at the beginning of this trail is 11,470 feet. It follows along ridges heading south coming to an overlook at approximately 0.2 miles. Continue south to a ridge and hill where the trail approaches a talus slope and climbs to 11,770 feet as it passes through a saddle at approximately 1.2 miles. The trail then descends through forest and pinnacles before climbing again to another pass at 11,830 feet. Bighorn Sheep can often be seen from this spot. The trail continues south where it crosses a stream at approximately 3.6 miles. The Horsethief Trail can be seen in the distance. This trail is in the Uncompahgre Wilderness for its entire length and Wilderness Regulations apply.

From Ouray:

Travel north on Hwy 550 for approximately 1.7 miles to the intersection with County Road 14, Dexter Creek Road. Turn right onto CR 14 and continue for approximately 2.4 miles, staying right at the fork. County Road 14 turns into Forest Service Road #871 at the forest boundary. Approximately 0.7 miles from the bridge that crosses Dexter Creek, there is a trail sign at the access point. Follow the Dexter Trail #205 for approximately 4 miles to its intersection with the Difficulty Creek Trail.
