The Forest Service is modernizing the Lake Irwin Campground and Day Use Area to replace the aging 1960s infrastructure that no longer meets current recreation or safety needs. The project requires full demolition and reconstruction of roads, trails, restrooms, kiosks, picnic areas, fire rings, and supporting structures. Parking capacity will increase significantly, and the campground will gain additional campsites as part of the overall upgrade. Work begins in September 2026 and continues through October 2027, resulting in major construction activity throughout the area.
- The campground will close on its normal seasonal date, September 8.
- The day‑use area will remain open in 2026.
- National Forest System Road (NFSR) 826 will remain accessible to the public this year.
- Visitors may encounter temporary road and area closures or slow‑downs as construction crews work in the area.
Beginning in 2027, the entire Lake Irwin recreation area will close for the season to allow demolition and reconstruction to proceed safely. This includes the campground, day‑use facilities and NFSR 826, which will be gated and monitored by law enforcement. Landowners who rely on NFSR 826 will retain access during construction. The project is expected to conclude with a reopening in June 2028, featuring expanded parking, improved infrastructure, and updated campground capacity.
