The Forest Service is modernizing the Lake Irwin Campground and Day Use Area to replace the aging 1960s infrastructure that no longer meets current recreation or safety needs. A. In 2026, the Lake Irwin Campground will close on its regular seasonal date of Sept. 8, while the day‑use area will remain open. The site will be closed to the public for the entire 2027 recreation season. A grand reopening is planned for June 2028.
Q. What improvements are coming to Lake Irwin?
A. Parking capacity will triple by reconstructing existing parking areas and establishing new parking areas where terrain allows, including added parking capacity on the south side of the spillway/dam. The campground will expand from 32 to 40 campsites, adding eight new sites. The site will have new trails and accessible pathways to accommodate foot and wheelchair access between parking areas and common areas. Roads, trails, kiosks, picnic areas and restrooms will be reconstructed or replaced.
Q. Why is the Lake Irwin area closed during reconstruction?
A. The Lake Irwin Campground and Day Use Area will undergo full demolition and reconstruction of facilities. Beginning in 2027, the entire recreation area will be closed to the public for safety while construction continues through October 2027. The site will function as an active construction zone, and allowing public access would pose significant hazards and slow progress needed to meet the planned June 2028 reopening.
Q. Why is there no detour for bypassing the construction zone?
A. The Lake Irwin recreation area and the surrounding basin can only be accessed by a single road that crosses a dam on the Ruby Anthracite Creek. A detour was evaluated but is not feasible due to steep terrain, limited space and the challenges of creating a safe crossing over the Ruby Anthracite Creek drainage.
Q. Will foot and bike traffic be permitted in the closure area?
A. No. The only practical route across Ruby Anthracite Creek is the dam located within the construction zone. Allowing pedestrians or cyclists to pass through would create unacceptable safety risks and cause delays to construction activities.
Q. How will closures be enforced?
A. A gate will be installed on National Forest System Road (NFSR) 826—the only access route through the day-use area. Landowners who access their property via NFSR 826 will retain necessary access.
Q. Where can I camp instead?
A. Camping around Crested Butte is permitted in developed campgrounds or designated campsites. Developed campsites are available at the Cement Creek and Gothic Campgrounds and designated campsites are spread across the six major drainages around Crested Butte. Q. Can I go there in the winter?
A. Over the snow winter access to Lake Irwin and the surrounding area will remain open. There will be no gate or closure during winter months. Local outfitters are permitted to groom the road during winter months as conditions allow.
