Little Elk #244

The Little Elk Trail #244 begins at the Little Elk Trailhead and ends at its intersection with the Larson Lakes Trail #236.  After Approximately 1.5 miles, this trail enters the Uncompahgre Wilderness where Wilderness Regulations apply, and heads south ascending steadily.  It travels in varied terrain passing through Well Gulch, High Bridge Gulch and Bill Hare Gulch before dropping into Independence Gulch.  After crossing the creek, the trail parallels the creek where many campsites can be found.  It will leave the Wilderness and come to an end at the Larson Lakes Trail.

Little Elk Trailhead:

From Lake City, travel north on Highway 149 for approximately 10 miles to the Alpine Forest Access Road, FSR #868.  Follow FSR #868 for approximately 2.5 miles to the Little Elk Trailhead.
