Lizard Head #505

The Lizard Head Trail #505 begins at Lizard Head Pass and ends at an intersection with the Wilson Mesa Trail #421. This trail provides access into the Lizard Head Wilderness, where Wilderness Regulations Apply. It offers a popular day hike or horseback ride as it rolls gently through a mature aspen and spruce-fir forest for the first 1.5 miles before ascending toward the Black Face Ridge. The trail ultimately descends into Bilk Creek Basin, following the creek until it intersects with the Wilson Mesa Trail. There are several outstanding views of waterfalls along Bilk Creek.

This trail, when combined with the Cross Mountain Trail #637, form a popular 9-mile loop. Trail users typically shuttle a vehicle to either the Lizard Head Trailhead or to the Cross Mountain Trailhead located two miles southwest of Lizard Head Pass along State Highway 145. The route climbs to a high point of 12,000 feet, offering spectacular views of prominent 13,113-foot Lizard Head Peak.

Directions

From Telluride: Travel 3 miles west on State Hwy 145. Turn left at the first highway intersection, continuing south on State Hwy 145 for approximately 10 miles to the top of Lizard Head Pass. The Lizard Head Trailhead is located on the west side of State Highway 145. Continue driving past the restroom for approximately 1,000 feet, then turn right onto a spur road that ends at the Lizard Head Trailhead parking area.
