Climbing and Caving
The GMUG National Forests offer many opportunities for climbing, from scrambling through canyon rock jams, following an arduous but rewarding trail to a peak or challenging yourself on a technical climb up an ice wall! Whatever your physical ability or skill level, our forest has many places to meet your interest.
Mountain Climbing
There are six 14,000 foot peaks on the GMUG National Forests and 56 13,000 foot peaks. If you would like to "bag" one the GMUG's 14'ers, check out our special places. Many of our lesser known 13,000 foot peaks and other mountains on our forest provide a climbing experience with more solitude along with the challenge.
Rock Climbing
Rock and ice climbing opportunities can be found on the GMUG National Forests. As the popularity of this sport increases, it is becoming more important that everyone help prevent resource damage. Removable hardware and temporary anchors are preferred. Climbers are responsible for making sure they are on public land open to climbing. If unsure, please contact the local ranger district office.
