Silver Basin #834

The Silver Basin Trail #834 begins and ends at intersections with the Dark Canyon Trail #830. The trail departs the Dark Canyon Trail to traverse high around the western flanks of the Ruby Range in the Raggeds Wilderness. It gradually ascents toward tree line then winds through glades of spruce and aspen. At Silver Basin the trail forks again, turning to steeply descend 1800 feet down a ridge to rejoin the Dark Canyon Trail above the Devil’s Stairway. The many vistas along this trail allow the sightseer the opportunity to oversee a majority of the spectacular Raggeds Wilderness Area. The Silver Basin Trail is one of the most scenic trails in the Raggeds Wilderness and provides the traveler with excellent opportunity to view wildlife, wildflowers and birds of the mountain west. Wildflowers seen along the trail include Indian Paintbrush, Avalanche lily, Lupine and many more alpine species. Keep an eye to the sky and you may be lucky enough to see a golden or bald eagle.
