Release Date: April 14th, 2025

NFSR 116 Road Work planned on the Springerville Ranger District

SPRINGERVILLE, Ariz. – April 14, 2025 –National Forest System Road (NFSR) 116 on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests will be under construction for the next few months, starting April 14, 2025.  This road is crucial to providing forest access and is a beautiful scenic drive to many popular destinations, including Thompson Trailhead, Big Lake, and Reservation Lake.

Work will begin at the cattleguard near the intersection of State Route 273 and NFSR 116 and continue approximately 5.4 miles to the cattleguard at the top of the NFSR 116 hill past the Thompson Trailhead. Road work includes reestablishing the road template, placing aggregate on the road, and stabilizing the road with a lignin blend. Please be aware when the lignin is wet it can stick to vehicles as it is like a form of glue that holds the road surface together and drive slowly to prevent the material from sticking to your vehicle.

Expect possible delays while traveling on the road and be prepared to slow or stop for heavy equipment along NFSR 116 while the work is being done. The road and Thompson Trailhead will remain open for travel while the work is being done. The public will be advised through signage, official notice, and future announcements.
