Hopewell Lake Trailheads (Continental Divide Trail)

With easy access off Highway 64, Hopewell Lake is one of the main points to catch the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail on the Carson National Forest.

Current Conditions
The Hopewell Lake Campground and Day Use Area is seasonally closed to vehicles. Walk-ins are welcome.

General Information

There are multiple locations to catch the trail from this recreation area:

  • Hopewell Lake Day Use Area Parking Lot (north and south side).
  • Near Hopewell Lake Campground sites #16 and #18 (please do not use this unless you are also camping).
  • Off Forest Road 91B, a 1/4-mile south of Hopewell Lake Campground (marked by blazes on trees on both sides).

Permits are not required for hiking the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.

Fees are reequired for parking at the Hopewell Lake Day Use Area during peak season.

Getting There

Directions

From Highway 64

  • Turn south onto Forest Road 91B.
  • Go a quarter mile to the Hopewell Lake Day Use Area.
  • Enter and go to the far end of the parking lot.
  • Or continue on Forest Road 91B

Travel Considerations

  • The Hopewell Lake Day Use Area parking lot is open seasonally. Walk-ins are welcome when gates are closed.
  • Forest Road 91B may not be accessible by vehicle in the winter due to snow berms.

This trailhead is a great location for day hikes into aspen stands during fall color (typically peaking in early to mid-October).

  • The Canjilon Lakes Trailhead is 24 miles south.
  • The Lagunitas Lakes Trailhead is 20 miles to the north.
  • For thru-hikers, the lake is mile 754.5 when traveling northbound.
