Winter Sports by District
Sacramento Ranger District (Near Cloudcroft & Alamogordo)
- Cloudcroft Ski Area & Ice Rink – A small, family-friendly ski hill and one of the southernmost ski areas in the U.S.
- Trestle Recreation Area – Great for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along scenic trails.
- Silver Springs & Deerhead Campgrounds – Popular for sledding and tubing after fresh snowfall.
Smokey Bear Ranger District (Near Ruidoso & Capitan)
- Ski Apache – The largest ski area in the region, featuring 55 runs, gondola rides, and stunning views of Sierra Blanca.
- Cedar Creek Trails – A top destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
- Perk Canyon & Bonito Lake Areas – Secluded winter hiking and backcountry snowshoeing opportunities.
Guadalupe Ranger District (Near Carlsbad & Queen)
- Due to the district’s lower elevation and desert climate, snowfall is rare, but visitors can still hike winter trails and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
