Sherman Guard Station Cabin

The Sherman Guard Station is located up the Horse Creek drainage just west of Daniel, Wyoming. The guard station is located 28 miles from Pinedale, Wyoming and 43 miles from Big Piney, Wyoming. The Sherman Guard Station has two buildings, the guard station and the bunkhouse. Both buildings have potable water, toilets, and showers in the summer months, and a newly installed vault toilet for use in the winter months. Each unit also has a full kitchen with a gas stove, gas refrigerator, and a variety of pots, pans, dishes and cutlery. The Sherman Guard Station provides access to wonderful fishing, hiking and horseback opportunities in the summer, and is located just west of the Horse Creek Winter Trailhead, which provides premiere on trail and off trail snowmobiling in the winter.

Please note: This site must be reserved on Recreation.gov and needs key to pass through the gate. Key should be retrieved from the Big Piney District Office. As of 6/2/25 There is a sinkhole at the second bridge at Horse Creek. Approx. mile-7 after the Guard Station spur road to Trail 055 has a washout. Use caution.

Directions

From the Town of Daniel, Wyoming, head north on United States Highway 189 (US 189) for approximately 2 miles until you reach the junction of US 189 and US 191. Turn left at the junction onto US 191/189. After a quarter of a mile, make a left to turn on Wyoming State Highway 354 (WY 354). Continue on WY 354 for 6 miles (the road name then changes to Daniel-Merna Road/County Road 23-112). Follow Daniel-Merna Road/County Road 23-112 for an additional 11 miles where you will then enter the Bridger-Teton National Forest (the road name changes again to Horse Creek Road/Forest Service Road 10389). Follow Horse Creek Road/Forest Service Road 10389 for half a mile. The entrance to the Sherman Guard Station is located on the left.
