Things to Remember
- Use a lightweight stove rather than building a fire.
- Check local ranger stations for fire regulations.
- Do not burn trash.
- Use existing fire rings in heavy-use areas as long as as the campsite is 100 feet away from water and trail.
- Build fires away from trees, shrubs, rocks and meadows.
- Burn only small sticks no larger than wrist size.
- Only collect dead and down wood.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Make sure that fire is DEAD OUT!
- Remove campfire ring and scatter the ashes and naturalize the area.
- Store your food and any scented items in a bear canister or hang using the counter balance method to keep bears and other wildlife from your food.
- Pack out all trash including toilet paper.
Due to the scarcity of wood and small woody material restrictions apply to campfires in some areas of the wilderness.
Please contact our wilderness permit issuing offices for further details. Violations of regulations under the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 36, may result in a citation and fine. Official orders authorizing regulation enforcement are available in the Forest and District Offices.
